September Meeting: Wolves, Wildlife & William Chamberlain

Our September monthly meeting brings something genuinely extraordinary to the table — or rather, to the patio. We'll be joined by William Chamberlain, founder of the U.S. Wolf Refuge, who will be bringing one of his wolves along for the evening. That's why we're heading outside this month.

About William Chamberlain

William Chamberlain with Jane Goodall
William Chamberlain with Dr. Jane Goodall.

William Chamberlain founded the U.S. Wolf Refuge in 1984. In the four decades since, the Refuge has taken in and cared for over 600 wolves and wolf-dogs — animals that animal control agencies and most shelters would otherwise euthanize without offering for adoption.

His education outreach program has been presented across the country to wildlife agencies, field officers, universities, high schools, elementary and middle schools, wildlife groups, and the general public. He was also instrumental in the reintroduction of the Mexican gray wolf.

The core of the Refuge's work is the careful, compassionate assessment of socialized wolves and wolf-dogs to determine whether they can successfully join a new pack or family situation. It's a complicated and delicate process — and William will be here to explain exactly how it works.

Meet Thunder

Thunder, a wolf from the U.S. Wolf Refuge
Thunder, one of the wolves from the U.S. Wolf Refuge, will be joining us on the patio.

William will be bringing one of the refuge's wolves to the dinner and talk — which is exactly why we're meeting on the patio rather than inside the restaurant. This is a rare chance to be up close with one of these magnificent animals while learning about the work being done to protect them.

We hope to see you there. Attendance helps show potential future speakers what kind of audience Northern Nevada Mensa can bring — so spread the word!
